A serious accident was avoided during a fire in Vile Parle (East) area of Mumbai after a security guard acted quickly to control the blaze near a live gas junction box, officials said on Tuesday.
The incident took place at Mahavir Co-operative Housing Society Limited (CHSL) on V. S. Khandekar Road when a fire broke out in a garbage area following the bursting of firecrackers, they said, adding that the flames came dangerously close to a live gas junction box belonging to Mahanagar Gas Limited (MGL).
“Showing great presence of mind, security guard Ram Bahor immediately put out the fire and closed both valves of the gas junction box, preventing a major mishap,” an official said.
MGL praised Ram Bahor for his alertness and responsible action, which helped protect residents and safeguard critical gas infrastructure.
Encouraging more citizen participation in safety efforts, MGL urged the public to support its ‘MGL Sahayogi’ initiative — a campaign that promotes reporting of threats, damages, or excavations near gas pipelines and assets, the statement said.
Citizens can report such incidents by calling 1800 2100 2100, the officials said.
