The reduced goods and services (GST) rates which came into effect from September 22, along with the festive fervour of Navratri and Dussehra, have fuelled new vehicle registrations across the regional transport offices (RTOs) in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR). Figures compiled from various RTOs across MMR have revealed that vehicle registrations have increased by 14 percent compared from the previous year.
There has been a significant rise in the purchases in both four-wheelers and two-wheeler categories.
“The Central government has reduced the GST rate on vehicles and the new rates have been implemented from September 22. As a result, purchases have increased this year during Navratri and Dussehra. According to the new structure of the GST tax, there has been an increase in the purchase of bikes with an engine capacity of less than 350 cc and four-wheelers with an engine capacity of less than 1,200 cc. The prices of these vehicles have been reduced by Rs 20,000 to Rs 1.25 lakh,” an RTO official said.
High purchase of two-wheelers
During the Navratri festival, 10,541 vehicles were registered in all four RTOs in Mumbai this year, of which two-wheelers accounted for the highest number.
Overall, 1,473 more vehicles across both categories (four- and two-wheelers) were registered compared to last year.
