Lions Municipal Swimming Pool, shut since 2016 due to constant structural leaks, is finally being rebuilt after years of delays and is expected to open to the public by March 2027. The pool, originally constructed in 1971 and located next to R Odeon Mall in Ghatkopar East, was a popular spot for local residents. Since its closure, the BMC had directed swimmers to the municipal pool in Chembur. Now, work on a new structure has begun.
On Monday, the BMC’s N ward invited residents, who had been demanding the pool’s revival, to review the plans for a new G plus 5 indoor sports complex. Deputy Municipal Architect for the Eastern Suburbs, Vinita Sahare, presented the draft design. “We have a draft of the current plan and will take inputs from locals on the changes they want,” she said. She added that the first slab has already been completed, and work on the second is underway.

Rakhee Jadhav, president of the NCP-SP, Mumbai region, who has been assisting residents in pushing for the pool’s reconstruction, said, “We are requesting the ward to consider all the recommendations from locals because they are the ones who will ultimately use the facility.”
The proposed complex will feature multiple sports, including handball, throwball, volleyball, basketball and badminton, with the swimming pool planned for the fifth floor. The current proposal includes a 50 by 25-metre pool with a depth of 2 metres. However, residents have asked for a deeper pool. One attendee, requesting anonymity, said, “We need at least a four to five-metre-deep pool. If kids are going to learn properly, the depth is essential, and there should be diving boards at two heights.”
Jadhav added, “I have already received multiple letters listing the changes residents want in the basic plan. I will hold another public meeting and then take all the requests to the N ward’s municipal commissioner for consideration.” Deputy Architect Sahare said the pool is expected to open to the public by March 2027. She added that while a delay of two or three months is possible, the team is working to complete the project within the timeline.
