The first test run of a 10-kilometre section of Thane Metro 4 in Thane city was successfully conducted on Monday, September 22, marking a significant milestone in the ongoing development of the city’s rapid transit network. The trial was carried out on the stretch between Cadbury Junction and Kasarvadavali, which has now been completed and cleared for operational testing.
Maharashtra Transport Minister Pratap Sarnaik highlighted the transformative impact of the metro line on the region’s transportation landscape. Speaking on Sunday, he noted that the 35.20-kilometre-long Metro-4 and 4A lines will play a crucial role in easing traffic congestion for commuters in both Mumbai and Thane. “The new metro corridors will connect Wadala, Ghatkopar, and Mulund in Mumbai with Kasarvadavali and Gaimukh in Thane, bringing the metropolis and its surrounding areas much closer and more accessible,” Sarnaik said.
The Minister emphasised that the metro lines are expected to deliver benefits beyond improved mobility. “These corridors will not only enhance transportation but also drive economic, social, and environmental growth in the region. Under the guidance of Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, our continuous efforts and follow-ups have ensured that Thane’s long-pending dream of metro connectivity is finally becoming a reality,” he added.
In addition to the ongoing construction, Sarnaik announced that the foundation stone for the Gaimukh–Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj statue stretch will be laid soon. This segment is anticipated to significantly reduce the chronic traffic congestion on the heavily used Ghodbunder Road, which has been a long-standing concern for local commuters.
Once fully operational, Metro Line 4 is set to strengthen the connectivity between Mumbai’s eastern and western suburbs, benefiting a wide spectrum of the population, including daily commuters, students, and working professionals. The new line is also expected to provide direct access to major business hubs, industrial zones, and educational institutions, further integrating the region’s economic and social framework.
The successful test run marks a key step toward the full commissioning of Metro-4, signalling a new era of modern, efficient, and sustainable urban transport for Mumbai and its neighbouring Thane district.
