Deonar Police registered the first information report (FIR) late on Friday evening following complaints by the former BJP Member of Parliament (MP) and a BMC Assistant Commissioner. The case was filed under the relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and Registration of Births and Deaths Act, 1969.
The complaint alleges that 196 fake birth certificates were issued between January 1 and December 31, 2024, through delayed registration processes. The accused have been identified as Dr Sanjay Funde, health officer and registrar of the M-East Ward (Govandi and Deonar), along with two of his assistants.
The Mumbai civic body has suspended Dr Funde and the two assistants with immediate effect. The fraudulent certificates were allegedly issued from Sahyog Apartment, near Govandi Metro Station, under Beat No 01 of Deonar Police Station. Information about the case reached the police around 5 pm on Friday and the case was formally lodged at 7.11 pm.

Earlier this week, Somaiya had alleged that 94 illegal certificates were issued by Dr Funde and had anticipated further suspensions. He said this is part of a “1,000 fake or illegal birth certificate scam” linked to fictitious hospitals and suspected Bangladeshi nationals.
