CR marks Gandhi Jayanti 2025 with ‘Swachhotsav’ at CSMT

Central Railway celebrated Mahatma Gandhi Jayanti 2025 with a special ‘Swachhotsav’ programme at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT).

The event was part of Swachhata Pakhwada 2025 and the ongoing Special Campaign 5.0.

According to an official statement, the day focused on honouring Mahatma Gandhi’s values of cleanliness and social harmony and Vijay Kumar, General Manager of Central Railway, led the celebrations.

He paid tribute to Mahatma Gandhi and Lal Bahadur Shastri at the Suburban Concourse, where a beautiful rangoli symbolising Gandhiji’s teachings inspired the public to maintain cleanliness.

As part of the event, the GM inspected two Electric Multiple Unit (EMU) rakes, decorated with murals of Mahatma Gandhi and Swachhata slogans. He also visited the Motorman’s cabin.

A highlight of the inspection was a newly converted Senior Citizen Compartment in one of the EMU rakes. Originally a luggage compartment, this area was redesigned by the Sanpada Car Shed, following an earlier model created by Matunga Workshop.

This special coach includes 7 designated seats for the elderly, anti-skid flooring and grab handles for safety, stainless steel partitions for visibility and ventilation and Vinyl wrapping for better ambience.

The GM also inspected electric and diesel locomotives painted with Mahatma Gandhi’s portraits and slogans like “Swachhata Hi Seva” and “Swachhotsav”, the statement said.

It said that a nukkad natak (street play) on the theme “Swachhata Hi Seva Hai”, performed by the Cultural Academy, Parel Workshop, received appreciation from the GM and attendees. A ‘Waste to Art’ exhibition promoting cleanliness and social awareness also attracted interest.

A specially designed Gandhi mural and selfie point added a creative touch to the event. Pamphlets with the Swachhata Oath were distributed among commuters to encourage public participation in keeping the railway clean, the statement said.

Central Railway will carry out various initiatives under Special Campaign 5.0 from October 2 to 31, 2025, focusing on cleanliness and sanitation, e-waste disposal, beautification of offices and stations, digitisation of work processes, public engagement and feedback and disposal of scrap and redundant materials to boost revenue, the statement further said.

it said that the goal is to embed cleanliness into daily operations and promote eco-friendly, efficient, and citizen-focused practices across the Central Railway network.
