Mumbai Traffic Police on Saturday announced a temporary ban on heavy goods motor vehicles (HGMVs) using the General Cariappa Flyover connecting Borivali East and Borivali West ahead of its reconstruction.
The restriction comes after engineers reported that the 32-year-old flyover has weakened and could pose a safety risk.
Deputy Commissioner of Police (Traffic – Western Suburbs) Ajit Borhade issued an official notification restricting heavy vehicle on the bridge.
The order states that the movement of HGMVs will be prohibited for three months starting from Saturday, November 1.
The official notification stated that the flyover, which has a designed service life of 40 years, is now in poor structural condition. To prevent any untoward incident and allow for demolition and reconstruction work, heavy vehicles will not be allowed to cross it.
During the restriction period, HGMVs must use the Sudhir Phadke Flyover as an alternative route, it said.
The traffic notification further said, “with effect from the date of issue of notification; and initially for a period of three (03) months, the movement of Heavy Goods Motor Vehicles (HGMVs) shall be prohibited on the General Cariappa Flyover connecting Borivali (East and West).
“In view of this situation, and in the interest of public safety as well as for the proper regulation of vehicular traffic in the surrounding area, it has been decided to prohibit the movement of heavy goods motor vehicles (HGMVs) on the said flyover as a precautionary measure,” the traffic notification said.
Alternate Route
Heavy goods motor vehicles shall use the Sudhir Phadke Flyover as an alternate route during this period.
“Legal action shall be taken under the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988 and other applicable laws against any person found violating the order. The Mumbai Traffic Police appeals to all motorists and citizens to cooperate by using alternate routes and by following the temporary restrictions to ensure public safety and smooth traffic flow,” the police said.
Meanwhile, in an another notification, the Mumbai Traffic Police on Friday announced traffic diversions at Shriram Mill Naka on Ganpatrao Kadam Road in Worli to reduce heavy congestion being witnessed after the opening of the Mumbai Coastal Road and the closure of Elphinstone Bridge for vehicles.
According to a traffic notification, the vehicles taking right turns at Shriram Mill Naka cause long traffic jams as there is limited space for turning. To ensure smoother movement, right turns from all four directions at the junction have been banned during the specified hours.
The diversions will be effective from 00:01 hrs to 23:55 hrs on November 1, 2025 and remain in place till November 15, it said.
