BMC to begin marriage registrations on weekends too staring Sept 21

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) will now offer marriage registration services on weekends (Saturdays and Sundays), starting September 21, an official statement said on Tuesday.

It said that a new Fast-Track Marriage Registration Service has been launched will be available on weekdays (Monday to Friday), allowing couples to receive their marriage certificates on the same day of registration.

Both services aim to ease the process for working professionals and reduce the backlog of pending registrations, officials said.

“We are committed to improving public service delivery. These two new services will make the marriage registration process faster and more accessible to Mumbaikars,” said Deputy Municipal Commissioner (Public Health) Sharad Ughade.

Under the weekend registration service, select BMC ward offices will remain open from 9 AM to 1 PM to conduct registrations. On Saturdays, the service will be available in 13 wards, while on Sundays, it will be offered in 12 different wards (see list below).

Meanwhile, the Fast-Track Marriage Registration Service will reserve 20 per cent of weekday slots (6 out of 30 per day) in every ward for same-day registration and certificate issuance.

To access either service, couples must complete all documentation, pay the standard registration fee along with an additional Rs 2,500, and appear in person with witnesses.

Why the Change?

On an average, 30,000 to 35,000 marriages are registered annually with BMC, a number considered low relative to the total number of marriages in Mumbai. Internal surveys revealed that many couples avoid registration due to the need to take time off work on weekdays. This led to the creation of more flexible options.

“These services will help reduce delays, encourage more registrations, and improve convenience for citizens,” said Executive Health Officer Dr Daksha Shah.
