BEST launches 150 new electric buses to power state`s green transport initiative

The Brihanmumbai Electricity Supply and Transport Undertaking (BEST) on Tuesday has launched 150 brand-new, fully electric buses to strengthen Mumbai’s sustainable and eco-friendly public transport network.

The 12-metre-long buses will be operated under the “wet lease” model, helping reduce carbon emissions and support the city’s clean energy goals, officials said.

Out of the 150 buses, 115 are manufactured by PMI Electro Mobility and will be operated by Mumbadevi Mobility Pvt. Ltd., while 35 are produced by Olectra Greentech Ltd. and will be managed by EV Trans Maharashtra Pvt. Ltd, they said.

The new buses are equipped with ramps to make boarding easier for senior citizens and differently-abled passengers. They will operate on 21 routes covering 21 municipal wards across Mumbai.

These routes will connect major suburban railway stations such as Andheri (W), Jogeshwari (W), Kurla (E&W), Bandra (W), Kandivali (W) and Borivali (W). The buses will also link with Mumbai’s Metro Lines 1, 2A, 7, and 3 (Aqua Line), offering smooth last-mile connectivity for metro commuters, an official statement said.

With this addition, around 1.9 lakh Mumbaikars are expected to enjoy a comfortable and sustainable travel experience every day, it said.

The introduction of these electric buses marks a significant step towards a cleaner, greener, and modern public transport system in Mumbai.

“The initiative supports the State Government’s vision of sustainable urban mobility and efforts to reduce carbon emissions across Maharashtra,” said an official.
