ATS searches multiple locations in Pune over suspected radicalisation

The Maharashtra Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) conducted searches at multiple places in Pune in connection with the suspected radicalisation of some people, officials said on Thursday, reported news agency PTI.

The searches were going on since late Wednesday night in the Kondhwa area and in the jurisdiction of four police stations in Pune city, based on specific intelligence about “radicalised people”, an official said, reported PTI.

“A verification of the individuals was underway by the ATS,” he said, adding the scope of the searches could increase, reported PTI.

Teams of the ATS and Pune Police were carrying out searches in the Kondhwa area, as per officials.

A heavy police force was deployed in some localities of Kondhwa since midnight, they said.

ED conducts raids in Mumbai in drugs trafficking case

In another case, the Enforcement Directorate on Wednesday conducted searches across Mumbai as part of a money laundering investigation linked to an alleged drug trafficking network, officials said, reported PTI.

The action has been undertaken to trace the sale proceeds acquired by a “well-established” drug trafficking network involving Faisal Javed Shaikh and Alfiya Faisal Shaikh, reported PTI.

Eight premises in Mumbai are being covered under the provisions of the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA), they said.

Faisal Shaikh was purchasing stimulant drug MD (mephedrone or `meow meow`) through Salim Dola, a notorious drug kingpin wanted by law enforcement agencies for his involvement in narcotics trafficking and funding illegal drug networks, the officials said, reported PTI.

The Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) has announced a reward for information leading to Dola`s arrest, according to the officials.

Meanwhile, the Customs department has arrested five passengers, who were trying to smuggle suspected hydroponic weed worth Rs 34.21 crore, in three separate cases at the Mumbai airport, said officials on Wednesday, reported PTI.

Based on specific information, the airport unit of the Mumbai Customs apprehended these passengers when they were trying to smuggle the narcotics into India on Monday (October 6) from abroad, an official said.

In the first case, Customs personnel intercepted a passenger who arrived at the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport from Phuket, Thailand. During examination of his baggage, they recovered 6.37kg of suspected hydroponic weed (marijuana) with an illicit market value of approximately Rs 6.37 crore, he said, reported PTI.
