Acharya Devvrat will be sworn in as the governor of Maharashtra on Monday, officials said, adding that he arrived in Mumbai on Sunday ahead of his swearing-in ceremony.
Devvrat will be sworn in as the governor of Maharashtra at the Darbar Hall in Raj Bhavan at 11 am on Monday, an official release said.
President Droupadi Murmu had earlier this week appointed had Gujarat Governor Acharya Devvrat to discharge functions of the Governor of Maharashtra, in addition to his own duties, it said.
Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde welcomed Governor Acharya Devvrat on his arrival at the Mumbai Central railway station in Mumbai on Sunday, reported the PTI.
The Gujarat governor, who has been given additional charge of Maharashtra, travelled to the city from Ahmedabad by Tejas Express with his wife Darshana Devi, a Raj Bhavan release said.
The governor was accorded a ceremonial Guard of Honour by the Railway Police at the Mumbai Central station, and the Mumbai police gave him the same at Raj Bhavan.
Meanwhile, earlier this week, Maharashtra Governor C P Radhakrishnan had demitted office on Thursday due to his election as the country`s next Vice-President, a statement issued by the President`s office said, reported the PTI.
At the time of his nomination as the vice-presidential candidate by the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA), Radhakrishnan was serving as the Governor of Maharashtra.
Radhakrishnan, the 67-year-old NDA nominee, won the vice-presidential election on Tuesday defeating the joint opposition nominee B Sudershan Reddy by a margin of 152 votes.
The election was necessitated by the sudden resignation of earlier Vice-President Jagdeep Dhankhar on July 21.
“Consequent upon demitting the office of Governor of Maharashtra by C P Radhakrishnan due to his election as the Vice-President of India, the President of India has appointed Acharya Devvrat, Governor of Gujarat, to discharge the functions of the Governor of Maharashtra, in addition to his own duties,” the communique had said, according to the PTI.
NDA candidate Radhakrishnan had on Tuesday won the Vice President election after winning 452 vote.
Opposition nominee B Sudershan Reddy got 300 votes, the returning officer had earlier aid.
“Total 767 votes were cast in Vice Presidential polls, 752 were valid and 15 were invalid,” Returning Officer PC Mody had earlier said.
