The Sharad Pawar-led Nationalist Congress Party (NCP SP) on Saturday expressed grave concern in Satara doctor death case and demanded strict action in the matter.
The NCP (SP) raised concerns over the alleged suicide of a 28-year-old woman doctor in Maharashtra’s Satara district, alleging the involvement of both political figures and police officials, reported the PTI.
NCP (SP) spokesperson Clyde Crasto said that while one of the accused named in the doctor’s suicide note has been arrested, another accused, a police officer, remains absconding.
“The authorities’ failure to trace him raises serious doubts and questions,” Crasto said, according to the PTI.
He further alleged that the doctor had been harassed by a Member of Parliament, questioning whether the MP was being shielded.
“The authorities must investigate why the doctor was being pressurised by the MP, his aides, and police officials to issue fake fitness certificates for arrested persons,” he added, the news agency reported.
Crasto also criticised Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, saying that the Opposition was not politicising the issue, as claimed by the government, but was demanding justice for an innocent woman.
“It is the duty of the Chief Minister and the Home Minister to ensure citizens feel safe. The fear of law appears to be diminishing in Maharashtra. Strict action must be taken to restore faith and ensure accountability,” Crasto said, according to the PTI.
Meanwhile, the Satara Police on Saturday arrested a software engineer in connection with the case.
The accused was arrested from Pune by a team from Phaltan police. He is one of the two men named in the suicide note reportedly written on the doctor’s palm which accused him of mentally harassing the doctor.
The police said that he has been booked for abetment of suicide and remanded to four days’ police custody by a Satara district court.
The woman doctor, posted at a government hospital in Satara, was found dead in a hotel room in Phaltan on Thursday night. Her note alleged that police sub-inspector (PSI) had raped her multiple times, while the other accused had mentally harassed her.
A senior police official said that as many as four teams have been formed to trace and nab the cop accused of raping the deceased.
