A 24-year-old man allegedly stabbed his former girlfriend to death before taking his own life in Kalachowkie on Friday morning, after a fallout in their decade-long relationship. According to the police, the accused Sonu Barai and the deceased woman Manisha Yadav, 24, are both residents of the Ambewadi area in Kalachowkie and had been together for over ten years, since their teenage days.
Over the past few weeks, the relationship had turned turbulent. Around 20-25 days ago, Barai reportedly began suspecting that Yadav was talking to another man on Instagram. His constant questioning and accusations allegedly led to repeated fights between the two.
“Almost every day, they would either meet or argue for hours over phone calls. The girl had grown frustrated and wanted to end the relationship,” said an officer from Kalachowkie police station. About ten days ago, Yadav told Barai she wanted to end the relationship.
Despite the separation, the two continued to see each other around the locality and kept talking on the phone. But each interaction reportedly ended in another argument over the same issue. On Thursday night, the couple is said to have spoken for several hours and decided to meet on Friday morning to try and resolve their differences.
Around 11 am, they met near Digvijay Mill at Dattaram Lad Marg in Kalachowki, intending to go somewhere quiet to talk. However, the conversation once again spiralled into an argument. In a fit of rage, Barai allegedly pulled out a kitchen knife he was carrying and stabbed Yadav multiple times, the police said.
In a desperate attempt to save herself, Yadav ran inside Aastha Maternity & Surgical Nursing Home, which was open at the time. Barai allegedly chased her into the clinic and attacked her again before turning the knife on himself. Alarmed by Yadav’s screams, people in the vicinity rushed to the spot and alerted the police. Officers from Kalachowki police station soon arrived, and both were taken to nearby hospitals.
“Yadav was first rushed to a local hospital and later shifted to JJ Hospital, where she succumbed to her injuries during treatment. Barai was taken to KEM Hospital, where doctors declared him brought dead,” said Deputy Commissioner of Police (Zone IV) R Ragasudha.
The police said Barai worked locally as a chef, which could explain why he had a knife with him. However, investigators suspect he may have planned the act in advance. “Since both are deceased, the exact truth will never be known,” an officer said.
The police will be filing an abated summary report, as both the accused and the victim are deceased. No statements from the families will be recorded, and the case will be closed.
