Building collapses in Bhiwandi area of Thane, no one hurt

A ground-plus-one storey building collapsed in Bhiwandi in Thane district of Maharashtra on Friday, though there are no reports of anyone sustaining injuries, civic officials said, reported the PTI.

Hafiz Building, a residential-cum-commercial structure along Diwanshah Dargah road, was old and was marked for demolition, he said.

“The incident took place at 9:15 pm. There are no reports of injuries,” Bhiwandi Nizampur Municipal Corporation (BNMC) disaster management cell chief Saquib Kharbe told PTI.

Officials said that two persons who were inside a ground-floor shop at the time of the collapse were successfully rescued by the disaster response team.

The relief operations were carried out by the civic officials, fire brigade and disaster management teams, they added, the news agency reported.

The civic officials have initiated an inspection of adjacent buildings to assess their structural safety, they said.

In an anothher incident, two elderly persons were injured on Wednesday morning when a section of a residential building collapsed in South Mumbai`s Chira Bazaar area, officials said.

The incident occurred at around 6:23 am at the Aatmaram Building on JSS Road, a MHADA-owned structure. According to the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), part of the first-floor kitchen in room number 11 gave way and fell to the ground floor.

The Mumbai Fire Brigade, local police, MHADA authorities, 108 Ambulance services, and ward staff were immediately mobilised to the site.

Two residents were injured in the collapse. Thakkarji Gala, 75, sustained minor injuries but refused hospital treatment. Gunvanti Gala, 71, was admitted to Bhatia Hospital, where she is reported to be in stable condition, according to the ‘C’ Ward Control Room.

Authorities are investigating the cause of the collapse, and the site has been secured to prevent further incidents.

Earlier, a portion of the Banushala Building, a ground plus one (G+1) structure on Sakhali Street, Madanpura, Byculla West, collapsed on Wednesday afternoon, officials had said.

The incident was reported at 12:49 pm to the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC). The Mumbai Fire Brigade (MFB) declared a Level-I emergency call at 1:00 am to ensure prompt response and safety measures.

BMC’s MFB, local police, and concerned ward staff were immediately mobilised to the site. No injuries were reported in the incident.
