While the city shimmered with lights on the auspicious occasion of Diwali, a heart-wrenching incident unfolded on Malad’s back road near Bangur Nagar police station. Amid the festive brightness, darkness took form when an unidentified woman allegedly abandoned her newborn baby girl, barely one or two days old, near a parked bus by a roadside garden, leaving her to die on the footpath.
Fortunately, destiny had other plans. A passerby out for a walk around 11 pm on Saturday night heard the faint cries of the infant and immediately alerted the police.
According to Bangur Nagar Police sources, the newborn was found wrapped in cloth with ant bites on her body, crying in pain. Officers said it seemed like divine intervention that the baby’s cries reached someone willing to help.
Otherwise, this road remains extremely deserted at night, with very few pedestrians or vehicles passing through.
“We rushed to the spot, safely brought the baby to the police station, and with the help of women constables, cleaned and wrapped her in fresh cloth before taking her to Shatabdi Hospital for immediate medical attention,” said an officer.
Doctors confirmed that the baby is safe and healthy. She is currently being cared for in the hospital’s children’s ward.
Sources revealed that several people have already come forward expressing a willingness to adopt the infant.
“We have registered a case against unknown persons and invoked relevant sections of the BNS. CCTV footage from the area is being scanned to trace the person who abandoned the newborn,” said Senior Inspector Ravindra Avhad.
