The Central Railway has successfully commissioned the long-awaited Karjat yard remodelling with an advanced signalling system boosting the capacity of the yard by 25 per cent for train movements. In addition to this, multiple lines have been remodelled, and a new bi-directional line added, so conflicting train movements can be avoided, and freight trains can be segregated from main lines. This marks a major milestone in Central Railway’s ongoing mission to modernise infrastructure, enhance safety, and improve operational efficiency.
The Rs 74.53-crore project replaces one of the oldest operational electrical signalling systems on CR with a state-of-the-art mechanism, paving the way for safer, faster, and more reliable train operations.
One of the highlights of the revamp is the newly commissioned fourth line between Karjat and Palasdari, which separates Khopoli branch movements from the main ghat section, eliminating conflicting movements of trains. This enhancement significantly improves throughput, punctuality, and safety, especially for suburban services.
In addition, reception and dispatch lines have been extended and standardised, allowing full-length goods trains to be handled on proper signals. This advancement ensures safer and smoother operations and saves up to 10 minutes per train movement.
With multiple lines remodelled and a new bi-directional line added, Karjat yard can now handle 25 per cent more train movements, including direct freight train receptions from Panvel without crossing main lines.
The new signalling system incorporates advanced signalling with real-time monitoring, integrated fire alarm, fuse alarm, and advanced safety systems. These systems reduce human intervention, improve signalling precision, and ensure faster, more efficient train operations.
Complementing the signalling upgrade, extensive civil and electrical works were completed, eight bridge extensions, two foot over bridge extensions. During the work block girders for new foot over bridge at Khandala were also launched.
