Dr Narlikar learning initiative for maths and science launched in Maharashtra

In a significant move aimed at strengthening foundational education in mathematics and science, the Maharashtra government has announced the launch of the “Dr Jayant Narlikar Mathematics and Science Learning Enrichment Program.” The initiative, named in honour of the eminent astrophysicist Dr Jayant Narlikar, seeks to instil scientific curiosity and enhance conceptual understanding among students across the state.

The program, developed under the vision of Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, has been formalised through a memorandum of understanding with the global educational platform Khan Academy. It is expected to benefit over five million students studying in government schools across Maharashtra.

During the academic year 2025-26, high-quality digital learning materials in mathematics and science, aligned with the Maharashtra State Curriculum, will be introduced in over 62,000 Zilla Parishad schools. Covering grades 1 to 10, the content will be available in both Marathi and English, enabling teachers to enrich classroom instruction and allowing students to reinforce their learning at school and home through interactive video lessons and practice exercises.

For students in grades 6 to 10, Khan Academy will provide science learning modules specifically tailored to the Maharashtra State Board syllabus. Additionally, preparation courses for state-level scholarship exams will be offered in both languages. To further support teaching and learning, all educators in the state will receive complimentary access to Khanmigo, an AI-based teaching assistant designed to enhance classroom engagement and student understanding.

The program will be implemented jointly by the State Education Department, under the leadership of the Commissioner of School Education, and the Maharashtra State Council of Educational Research and Training. District-level supervision will be provided by District Education Officers and Chief Executive Officers of Zilla Parishads, with support from local education and training institutions. A real-time monitoring dashboard will track student engagement, study duration, and learning outcomes, ensuring transparent evaluation of progress and impact.

Chief Minister Fadnavis emphasised that the initiative will provide all students, regardless of location or background, with equal access to world-class educational resources. By overcoming geographic and resource-related challenges, the program aims to cultivate confidence, curiosity, and ambition among students, ensuring that they develop a strong foundation in the future-focused fields of mathematics and science.

Through the “Dr Jayant Narlikar Mathematics and Science Learning Enrichment Program,” Maharashtra positions itself at the forefront of digital learning innovation, making high-quality education accessible to every government school in the state.
