The Marine Drive Police in Mumbai have arrested a man for allegedly cheating a resident of Kala Chowki of Rs 8.82 lakh by promising financial assistance through the Chief Minister`s Relief Fund and a job on the Vande Bharat Express, an official said.
The accused has been identified as Sameer Chundmunge, a resident of Chembur in eastern suburbs, he said.
According to the police, Chundmunge allegedly took Rs 50,000 from the complainant Rakesh Shelke and his wife, claiming he could secure a Rs 10 lakh loan for each of them under the CM Relief Fund scheme.
Police said that the fraud took place between April 2023 and June 2024.
Th suspect allegedly collected Rs 8.32 lakh from Shelke’s nephew by promising him a job as a Ticket Checker (TC) on the Vande Bharat Express. The money was allegedly accepted by the accused at the Akashvani MLA Niwas canteen, the official said, adding that that neither the promised financial aid from Chief Minister Relief Fund nor the job materialised.
A case was registered under Sections 406 and 420 of the Indian Penal Code.
“Chundmunge has been arrested and remanded in police custody till September 29,” a police official said.
