Maharashtra rains: Raj Thackeray demands to declare wet drought, writes to CM

Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) chief Raj Thackeray on Wednesday wrote to Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, urging immediate action to support farmers who have suffered heavy losses due to continuous and extreme rainfall in parts of the state.

In the letter, posted on his X account, Raj Thackeray said that the unseasonal rains, which began in mid-May, have devastated several parts of rural Maharashtra. Farmlands have been washed away, and crops have been destroyed on a large scale.

According to Raj Thackeray, the economic backbone of rural Maharashtra has collapsed, and farmers are now in deep distress.

The MNS chief has demanded that the state government must announce a state-wide wet drought without applying strict eligibility criteria. He criticised the current compensation of Rs 7,000-Rs 8,000 per acre as inadequate and demanded a minimum compensation of Rs 30,000 per acre, stating that it will take at least a year for farmers to recover.

Acknowledging the state`s strained finances, he urged the government to actively follow up with the central government for financial support, just as Bihar has received in the past.

He said that the ministers should not go to Delhi only for political issues but also for the welfare of the state.

Raj Thackeray highlighted how natural disasters often disrupt children’s education.

He requested the state to ensure that not a single child drops out, and that they receive all required textbooks and notebooks. He added that the government must show the same urgency it showed while promoting Hindi.

Due to the risk of disease outbreaks after floods, he asked the government to make sure that state hospitals and health centres are fully stocked with medicines and remain alert.

He warned that after such disasters, banks begin aggressive loan recovery, which causes more distress to farmers. He said the government must issue guidelines to banks immediately or else, in his words, “our Maharashtra Sainiks will respond accordingly.”

Raj Thackeray reminded the government that showing sympathy to farmers is their duty, but excessive publicity during such visits is against Maharashtra’s culture. He insisted that the government stay away from media gimmicks and focus on real help.

He concluded by saying that the government must announce compensation of Rs 30,000-Rs 40,000 per acre and ensure that farmers and their families can rebuild their lives.
