IMD issues yellow alert for Mumbai, Palghar and Thane; predicts rains

The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) on Wednesday issued a yellow alert for Mumbai, Palghar and Thane districts in Maharashtra and predicted thunderstorm and rains.

In a weather bulletin, the IMD predicted, “Thunderstorm accompanied with lightning, light to moderate rains and gusty winds (30-40 kmph) at isolated places were very likely in Mumbai on September 24.”

A similar prediction was made for several parts of Maharashtra including Thane and Palghar districts.

A yellow alert was issued for Raigad, Nashik, Jalgaon, Beed, Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, Latur, Dharashiv, Nanded and Ahliyanagar districts in Maharashtra, predicting that thunderstorm accompanied with lightning, light to moderate rains and gusty winds (30-40 kmph) at isolated places were very likely on September 24.”

Several parts of earlier this week witnessed heavy rains leading to flooding in multiple districts in Marathwada 

Earlier in the day, the weather department stated that Mumbai was expected to experience a generally cloudy sky with moderate rainfall across the city.

According to the India Meteorological Department`s (IMD) Mumbai weather updates, there is a possibility of thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and gusty winds reaching speeds of 30 to 40 kmph at isolated locations.

The IMD has issued a yellow alert for the city, warning of thunderstorms with lightning, along with localised rainfall and strong winds. Residents have been advised to remain cautious, particularly in low-lying and vulnerable areas.

Significant tidal activity is also forecast. A high tide of 4.07 meters is expected at 1.02 pm on September 24, followed by a low tide of 0.63 meters at 7.04 pm Early on September 25, a high tide of 4.21 meters is predicted at 1.35 am, with a low tide of 1.54 meters at 7.12 am, as per the latest Mumbai weather updates.

Authorities have urged citizens, especially those residing near coastal areas, to stay alert during high tide hours.

Meanwhile, the water levels in lakes supplying drinking water to Mumbai have risen following heavy rainfall in their catchment areas. According to Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) data, the combined stock in the seven reservoirs that provide water to the city now stands at 98.96 per cent.

As per the BMC on Wednesday (September 24), the collective water stock in these reservoirs is 14,32,375 million litres, which amounts to 98.96 per cent of their total capacity.

The BMC supplies drinking water daily from Upper Vaitarna, Modak Sagar, Tansa, Middle Vaitarna, Bhatsa, Vehar, and Tulsi lakes.
