Six women and a man suffered serious burn injuries when a fire broke out at a shop after a gas cylinder leak in Mumbai`s Kandivali area on Wednesday morning. Three of the persons suffered nearly 90 per cent burns, according to the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC).
As per the civic body, the fire broke out at Ram Kisan Mestri Chawl, beside Akurli Maintenance Chowki, opposite ESIC Hospital on Military Road, Akurli Cross Road No.3, Kandivali East. The incident was reported to the Mumbai Fire Brigade (MFB) at 9:05 AM.
According to authorities, the fire originated from electrical wiring and installations and quickly spread to items including edibles, an LPG cylinder, the main valve, a gas regulator, and a gas stove in the ground plus one-storey shop. Firefighters were able to contain and extinguish the blaze by 9:33 AM.
Seven people sustained burn injuries in the incident and were initially admitted to ESIC Hospital. Three of the injured were subsequently shifted to BDBA Hospital due to the severity of their burns.
At ESIC Hospital, Shivani Gandhi (51) suffered 70 per cent burn injuries, Nitu Gupta (31) sustained 80 per cent burns, Janaki Gupta (39) had 70 per cent burns, and Manaram Kumacat (55) sustained 40 per cent burns. At BDBA Hospital, Raksha Joshi (47) and Durga Gupta (30) suffered 85–90 per cent burns, while Poonam (28) sustained 90 per cent burn injuries.
All patients received initial treatment under Dr Vilas Takke at BDBA Hospital before being shifted to Kasturba Hospital for further specialised care.
Mumbai Fire Brigade continues to investigate the exact cause of the fire.
One killed, four injured in blast at chemical factory in Palghar
In another incident, One worker was killed and four others sustained injuries in an explosion at a chemical factory in Maharashtra`s Palghar district, officials said on September 19, reported PTI.
The blast occurred at Limbani Salt Industries around 7.30 pm on September 18, they said.
Five workers were present at the site during the mixing of metal and acid, a highly reactive process that triggered an explosion, said Vivekanand Kadam, chief of the Palghar District Disaster Management Cell, reported PTI.
He said one of the workers was killed on the spot, while two others sustained extensive burns and were rushed to a nearby hospital, where they are undergoing critical care.
Two more workers stationed a little farther escaped with minor injuries, and their condition is said to be stable, the official said.
Emergency teams, including the fire brigade and disaster management personnel, quickly reached the site and brought the situation under control.
The local police are probing the incident, and an offence is likely to be registered after the authorities file a report, officials said.
