The water levels in lakes supplying drinking water to Mumbai have risen following heavy rainfall in their catchment areas. According to Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation`s (BMC) Mumbai rains data, the combined stock in the seven reservoirs that provide water to the city now stands at 99.51 per cent.
As per the BMC`s latest Mumbai rains data on Tuesday (September 23), the collective water stock in these reservoirs is 14,37,132 million litres, which amounts to 99.51 per cent of their total capacity.
The BMC supplies drinking water daily from Upper Vaitarna, Modak Sagar, Tansa, Middle Vaitarna, Bhatsa, Vehar, and Tulsi lakes.
Of these, Tansa has 100 per cent water stock, Modak Sagar 100 per cent, Middle Vaitarna 99.50 per cent, Upper Vaitarna 99.58 per cent, Bhatsa 99.27 per cent, Vehar 100 per cent and Tulsi 100 per cent.
Lower (Modak Sagar), Middle and Upper Vaitarna lakes, along with Tansa, supply water to the western suburbs from Dahisar Check Naka to Bandra and to the western parts of the city from Mahim to Malabar Hill.
Bhatsa, Vehar, and Tulsi together form the Bhatsa system. Water from this system is treated at the Panjarpur Water Treatment Plant and distributed to the eastern parts of Mumbai, covering the eastern suburbs from Mulund Check Naka to Sion and further to Mazgaon.
Meanwhile, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast a generally cloudy sky with light to moderate rainfall in Mumbai and its suburbs today. The city may also witness thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and gusty winds reaching speeds of 30–40 kmph at isolated locations.
A yellow alert has been issued for the day, warning of thunderstorm activity along with possible lightning strikes and gusty winds. Residents have been advised to exercise caution, particularly in low-lying and coastal areas.
According to tide data, the city will experience a high tide of 4.19 meters at 12:37 pm, followed by a low tide of 0.64 meters at 6:40 pm. Another high tide of 4.26 meters is expected at 1:06 am on September 24, while the next low tide will be at 6:46 am, measuring 1.33 meters.
Rainfall recorded between 8 am on September 22 and 7 am on September 23 stood at 46.18 mm in the city region, 27.62 mm in the eastern suburbs, and 38.79 mm in the western suburbs.
