The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has emphasised that construction of flyovers and skywalks across the city should be completed without causing any inconvenience to citizens. Additional Municipal Commissioner (Projects) Abhijeet Bangar issued these directives during a site inspection of ongoing projects on Wednesday.
The first phase of the flyover reconstruction between Bandra and Dharavi is expected to be completed by November 30. Work orders for the second flyover at the project site will be issued soon, with a target to finish the entire project within 18 months. Bangar directed the officials concerned to ensure that the construction timelines are strictly adhered to and that residents face no disruption during the work.
Bangar took an inspection of several projects, including the Bandra–Dharavi flyover, the E Moses Road and Dr Annie Besant Road flyover over the Mithi River, and the Bandra skywalk. Chief Engineer (Bridges) Uttam Shrote and other officials were present during the inspection.
The Bandra–Dharavi flyover reconstruction is being carried out in two phases to ensure minimal obstruction to the Mithi River flow. Phase-1 of the flyover is about 90 per cent complete. Once completed, the southern lanes of the existing bridge will be open for traffic, providing direct access towards Mahim Causeway and improving traffic flow, speed, and safety for commuters.
The second flyover’s work orders will be issued shortly, and the deadline for it will be 18 months. Officials were directed to secure all the necessary permissions, including non-objection certificates (NOCs) from the traffic department, before construction begins.
The E Moses Road–Dr Annie Besant Road flyover will create a direct link between major roads, significantly easing traffic around Worli Naka, Mahalaxmi, and Lower Parel. Currently, the project is about 30 per cent complete, and the Mumbai civic body has set a deadline of December 2026 to complete it.
Meanwhile, the Bandra Railway Station to Maharashtra Housing and Area Development Authority (MHADA) office skywalk reconstruction project is about 80 per cent complete. The Mumbai civic corporation aims to open it to the public by December 31 in compliance with the Bombay High Court directives. Remaining work is expected to be completed over the next three months, with strict deadlines set for each phase. Contractors have been warned of strict action for any delays.
