Heavy rain alerts issued for Mumbai, Thane, Palghar; red alert for Raigad

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a series of weather alerts across the Mumbai Metropolitan Region and Konkan belt for Monday, warning of widespread rainfall activity accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds.

Mumbai, Thane, and Palghar districts are under an orange alert, with forecasts indicating heavy to very heavy rainfall at isolated places, along with thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds. These conditions are considered very likely, raising the risk of disruptions to daily life, particularly in low-lying and flood-prone areas.

In Raigad, a red alert, the highest level of warning, has been issued. The district is expected to receive extremely heavy rainfall, accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning, and strong winds. The IMD has warned of a heightened risk of flooding, landslides, and major traffic disruptions in the region.

Citizens in all districts are advised to remain indoors where possible, avoid unnecessary travel, and stay tuned to official weather bulletins. Emergency services and local authorities have been placed on high alert to manage any potential crises.

Schools, transport services, and local administrations are actively monitoring the situation, especially in Raigad, where the intensity of rainfall may lead to greater impact.

Further down the Konkan coast, Ratnagiri is also under an orange alert, with the IMD forecasting heavy to very heavy rainfall, thunderstorms, and gusty winds. Though no red alert has been declared, authorities warn of possible waterlogging, reduced visibility, and disruption to road and rail traffic, especially in vulnerable areas.

In Sindhudurg, a yellow alert has been issued. The district is expected to witness thunderstorms accompanied by lightning, heavy rainfall, and gusty winds (30–40 kmph) at isolated locations. The IMD warns of short-duration intense showers, which may cause localised flooding and minor structural damage.

Meanwhile, in the Western Ghats region, the ghats of Pune are under a red alert, while the ghats of Satara have been placed under an orange alert, owing to the likelihood of intense rainfall activity in hilly terrain, posing additional risks such as landslides and road blockages.

Mumbai schools remain open despite red alert and heavy rainfall

Many Mumbai schools remained open on Monday morning despite the red alert, as they had not received any official intimation from the civic body. While a few schools cancelled classes for pre-primary students, no official decision has been made yet regarding the afternoon sessions.

Heavy traffic and minor waterlogging in areas around Dadar have disrupted school bus schedules. Bus operators have reported possible delays. Some schools in Wadala allowed students to leave early, causing sudden changes in planned bus routes.
