Mumbai rains: City braces for two-day spell of rain

While the India Meteorological Department (IMD) had originally signalled an orange alert (moderate to intense spells of rain and possibility of thunder/lightning accompanied with gusty winds in some areas) for Mumbai for the whole of Sunday and Monday, according to the district forecast, this alert has been changed to yellow (thunderstorms accompanied with lightning, rainfall, and gusty winds reaching 30 to 40 kmph) for Sunday and Monday. The city has been put on green alert on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday.

The other coastal districts of Maharashtra, including Palghar, Thane and Sindhudurg, are also on yellow alert on Sunday and Monday, while Raigad and Ratnagiri are on Orange alert. In the 24 hours between Saturday and Sunday, Mumbai’s island city recorded 32.28 mm of rainfall, the western suburbs recorded 58.33 mm, and the eastern suburbs recorded 55.94 mm. In the early hours of Sunday, several parts of Mumbai received intense spells of rainfall, and IMD had issued a nowcast orange alert for Mumbai at 4 am on Sunday. During this time, Santacruz recorded 87 mm of rainfall, Bandra  recorded 67 mm, and Juhu recorded 54.5 mm, while Colaba recorded 19.4 mm and Byculla recorded 15.5 mm.

During these 24 hours, the maximum temperature in Mumbai was at 29 degrees C. Similarly, the maximum temperature on Saturday was 29.7 degrees C against over 31 degrees C recorded in the 24 hours between Thursday and Friday.  So far, this monsoon the Santacruz weather station has recorded 116 per cent or 2713.1 mm of rainfall against the annual average rainfall of 2319 mm and Colaba has recorded 82 per cent with 1719.6 mm of rainfall, against the annual average of 2095 mm. In contrast, until September 14 last year (2024) the Colaba observatory had recorded 93.67 per cent or 2268.8 mm of rainfall, and the Santacruz observatory had recorded 98.39 per cent or 2555.1 mm of rainfall.
