In a historic shift over a century on, the Central Railway is realigning the Harbour Line tracks to build a new station structure at Kurla this weekend. During a 14.5-hour mega block, the proposed diversion of rail lines between Kurla and Tilak Nagar stations will take place.
“It is being planned to realign and shift the tracks westwards to align with the new elevated station work. The elevated station at Kurla, part of the 5th and 6th lines, will not only cater to regular traffic but also have locals originating and terminating there. To proceed with the elevated station project at Kurla, we needed to use the space occupied by the existing century-old tracks. To keep trains running, we built a new set of tracks for a small stretch, where all existing Harbour Line traffic will be diverted as the work on the elevated corridor continues,” a senior official said.
The elevated railway station rises shortly after Chunabhatti station as the train moves towards Kurla and enters the new section. It lands just before the Santacruz–Chembur Link Road crossover on the Harbour Line near Tilak Nagar station. To facilitate this construction, the new set of two tracks has been built over marshy land between Kurla and Tilak Nagar stations, and the trains will be diverted here from Monday,” he explained.
The project, started around 2015, has also been flagged as one of the most mismanaged projects and has recently gained traction, with work speeding up after much criticism and censure.
