The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bombay has issued a clarification after a flyer regarding a workshop on South Asian capitalism surfaced online across various social media platforms, carrying the institute’s name without approval.
A post regarding a flyer of a workshop on South Asian capitalism was soon brought to the attention of the institute authorities. This workshop was reportedly scheduled to be held at the University of Berkeley in partnership with UC Berkeley and the University of Massachusetts-Amherst for young scholars. However, the IIT Bombay authorities were totally unaware of it.
Upon learning about the post, the institute directed the organisers to immediately take down the flyer from social media platforms and remove IIT Bombay’s name from all material linked to the event. The details of the programme have also been removed from the website of the New Political Economy Initiative, which has an ongoing project at IIT Bombay.
Upon learning about the post, IIT Bombay said that “IIT Bombay has a project related to the New Political Economic Initiative. However, we were totally unaware of the published flyer.”
“Upon hearing about this post, we issued immediate instructions to the organisers to take down the flyer from all social media platforms and remove IIT Bombay`s name from everything to do with this event,” they added.
The details of the programme have been removed from the website of the New Political Economy Initiative with immediate effect. No one from IIT Bombay is attending the conference. The Institute was not at all consulted about the flyer. Adding that, “We are deeply shocked and upset by its content.”
The Institute will cease to associate with these faculty members from UC Berkeley and the University of Massachusetts-Amherst going forward.
While taking this matter into serious consideration, the authorities from IIT Bombay said that we will further investigate this matter.
