The Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC) on Wednesday conducted a public hearing on 270 objections and suggestions received regarding its draft ward structure, which was released with the approval of the Maharashtra State Election Commission.
The state government appointed Additional Chief Secretary (Transport and Ports) Sanjay Sethi to lead the hearing process. The session took place at the Late Narendra Ballal Hall in the TMC headquarters and saw participation from elected representatives and citizens who had raised concerns over the proposed ward demarcations.
As per the draft plan, TMC will have 33 wards and a total of 131 corporators. Of these, 32 wards will elect four members each, and one ward will elect three members. The draft notification also detailed the geographic boundaries of each ward. Citizens were invited to submit feedback until September 4, following which the hearing was scheduled.
Senior civic officials present included Municipal Commissioner Saurabh Rao, Additional Commissioner Prashant Rode, Deputy Commissioner (Elections) Umesh Birari, Assistant Town Planner Sangram Kanade, Assistant Commissioner Sachin Borse, and Executive Engineer Devendra Ner.
The highest number of submissions came from the Diva Ward Committee (122), followed by Majiwada-Manpada (59) and Naupada-Kopri (43). Other areas included Uthalsar (17), Vartak Nagar (13), Mumbra (8), Kalwa (4), Savarkar Nagar-Lokmanya Nagar (3), and Wagle Estate (1).
The process is part of the lead-up to the next civic elections and is crucial in finalising ward boundaries, which play a significant role in local governance and political representation.
