The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) Education Department on Monday evening announced a holiday for all primary and secondary schools in Mumbai on Tuesday, August 19, 2025, due to ongoing heavy rainfall across the city.
According to an official notification, the decision has been made keeping in mind the safety of students, teachers, and non-teaching staff at city schools.
The holiday applies to all schools under every management and medium, including private aided and unaided institutions within the BMC limits, it said.
The BMC has also directed that any scheduled exams, training sessions, or school activities for the day be rescheduled and completed at a later date by the respective schools, officials said.
The schools will also remain closed in Thane, Bhiwandi and Palghar districts of Maharashtra.
The civic authorities on Monday issued official notifications for their respective jurisdictions citing heavy rains in the region.
A notification issued by the Thane Municipal Corporation stated, The announcement was made to ensure the safety of students during the extreme weather conditions affecting Thane city.
The Thane Municipal Commissioner issued the directive after reviewing alerts from the State Emergency Centre and the Regional Meteorological Centre in Mumbai`s Colaba.
Any scheduled training programmes, exams, or school activities planned for August 18 and 19 should be rescheduled and completed later as per school-level planning. All students and parents must be informed immediately of the school closure through appropriate channels, the notification said.
In an official notification, the Bhiwandi-Nizampur City Municipal Corporation said that due to continuous heavy rainfall and a red alert issued by the India Meteorological Department, a holiday has been declared for all schools on Tuesday, August 19, 2025, as a safety measure for students.
A similar notification was also issued by the civic authority in Palghar district of Maharashtra.
Mumbai and its adjoining areas continued to witness heavy rains on Monday with some parts of the city receiving over 100 mm of rainfall.
Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis said that Mumbai received 177 millimetres (mm) of rain in a 6-8 hour period on Monday and asked citizens to observe all precautions since more is expected through the day along with high tides.
