Mumbaikars woke up to extremely heavy rainfall on Monday morning, prompting the India Meteorological Department (IMD) to issue a red alert for the city and its surrounding areas.

This marked the third consecutive day of intense rainfall in Mumbai, resulting in flooded roads and disrupted daily life. Areas like Andheri Subway and Lokhandwala Complex witnessed waterlogging, slowing traffic and causing inconvenience for commuters.

Mumbai Police Commissioner Deven Bharti also issued a public advisory on X, “Dear Mumbaikars, caution is advised as heavy rainfall continues. Incidents of waterlogging and reduced visibility are being reported across the city. Please avoid non-essential travel, plan your commute carefully, and step out only if necessary. Our teams are on high alert and ready to assist. In case of emergency, please dial 100/112/103.”

Train services, although not suspended, were running around 10 minutes behind schedule.

The Central Railway`s Harbour Line was particularly affected, with waterlogged tracks in low-lying areas and technical issues at track-changing points between Kurla and Tilak Nagar stations.

In some parts of the city, rainfall was so intense it reduced visibility, further hindering vehicular movement.

The IMD warned of extremely heavy rain at isolated spots, leading the city’s civic body to declare a holiday for schools and colleges operating in the second half of the day.

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) announced that all schools and colleges with post-noon shifts would remain shut on Monday. “Keeping in mind the safety of students due to the continuous rains that have persisted since morning, Municipal Commissioner and Administrator Bhushan Gagrani has declared a holiday for all schools and colleges in Mumbai operating after 12 noon on Monday, 18 August,” the BMC posted on X.
