On the occasion of the 150th Save Aarey Forest protest, nature lovers, environmental activists, and concerned citizens gathered once again on Sunday at the Birsa Munda Chowk in Aarey Colony, near the controversial Metro Car Shed site, to voice their commitment to protecting one of Mumbai’s last remaining green lungs.
The protest, first ignited on July 3, 2022, emerged as a response to the large-scale tree cutting undertaken to facilitate the construction of a Metro Car Shed in Aarey. What began as outrage over the destruction of trees has since evolved into a broader movement, one rooted in the call for sustainable, organic development that respects both people and the planet.
The protesters oppose viewing forests, wildlife, and communities as mere obstacles or resources to be exploited for economic gain.
