Residents Endangered by Unsafe Construction Practices in Chandivali Society

5th January 2025.

Chandivali, Mumbai – Residents of a local housing society are expressing serious concerns over hazardous construction activities being conducted by Harish Projects Construction Pvt. Ltd., under the supervision of SDC Structural Diagnosis Center (SDC), the appointed Project Management Consultant (PMC). The construction work, reportedly lacking essential safety measures, has led to property damage and poses significant risks to the inhabitants.

According to the society’s managing committee, the contractors had assured that safety protocols would be strictly followed, including restricting access to hazardous areas and deploying personnel to enforce these measures. Contrary to these commitments, residents have observed a blatant disregard for safety precautions. Debris from upper floors has fallen unchecked, resulting in damaged windows of lower flats and creating a perilous environment for all occupants.

The lack of coordination between Harish Projects Construction and SDC has exacerbated the situation. Inadequate installation of barricades and safety nets has further endangered residents’ lives. Additionally, construction materials have been placed in a manner that obstructs natural light and ventilation, infringing upon residents’ basic rights to air and light.

Residents have repeatedly approached Project Engineer Sanjeev Mandal, seeking redress and the implementation of necessary safety measures. However, their appeals have been met with unprofessionalism and neglect, leaving the community feeling harassed and vulnerable.

Legal experts indicate that contractors can be held liable for negligence leading to property damage or personal injury. Homeowners possess the legal right to seek compensation for damages resulting from a contractor’s failure to perform work according to agreed-upon standards or to exercise proper care during the course of the job.

The residents are now contemplating legal action to address the ongoing safety violations and to compel the responsible parties to adhere to mandated construction safety norms. The situation underscores the critical need for strict enforcement of building codes and safety regulations to protect residents from negligent construction practices.
