Mumbai: Constable who rammed ITI student in Vile Parle faces action

The Mumbai Police have taken disciplinary action against Police Constable Chavan, who allegedly rammed a police jeep into a 20-year-old ITI (Industrial Training Institute) student — Raghuveer Prahlad Kumbhar — in Vile Parle, causing injuries. Chavan is attached to the Protection Branch, and disciplinary proceedings have been initiated against him. The police are also awaiting his blood test report to determine whether he was under the influence of alcohol at the time of the incident.

Kumbhar reportedly saved his friend Gauri, 15, by pushing her out of the way when the speeding police vehicle approached them on Sunday night. He sustained multiple injuries to his hand, chest, thighs, and legs. He told the police that Chavan appeared to be intoxicated and fled the scene without offering any medical assistance.

Speaking with mid-day, DCP Ganesh Gawde of the Protection Branch said, “We have taken disciplinary action against Chavan for negligence. The Vile Parle police have also registered an FIR in this matter. They will submit their full report to us, and action will be taken accordingly.”

According to the police, the incident occurred around midnight on Sunday, when Chavan was returning after dropping off an officer. Upon reaching Vile Parle, he allegedly lost control of the police jeep and drove right into Kumbhar and Gauri. While Gauri was saved, Kumbhar got struck by the speeding vehicle.

Kumbhar told mid-day, “Chavan did not help or take me to the hospital. He was drunk and could not understand what I was saying. He wasn’t even in a condition to step out of the car. He said he would follow my auto to the hospital, but escaped after the accident.” Kumbhar later approached the Vile Parle Police and registered an FIR against an unknown police constable. The police subsequently traced Chavan using the vehicle number provided by the injured student.
