Is the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) holding back the inauguration of the 200-metre open space beneath the arm of the Mrinal Tai Gore flyover in Goregaon East until the civic elections?
The stretch, once occupied by balloon sellers, was cleared and developed into a recreational zone. But even six months after completion, the space remains inaccessible to the public.
A local resident, who did not wish to be named, said, “The area beneath the Mrinal Tai Gore flyover, opposite the Mumbai Veterinary College gate, was previously occupied by four to five families of balloon sellers.
They left the place filthy and neglected. The BMC did a commendable job clearing the encroachment and installing grills. This space could now be used for morning walks or meditation. So why is it locked?”
Locked entrance to the fenced space beneath the flyover
A mid-day visit revealed that the 200-metre stretch under the flyover has been divided into two sections, with grills installed on all sides. Two gated entrances have been provided, but both remain locked. The space is suitable for short walks, meditation and basic exercise.
Shiv Sena (UBT) Shakha Pramukh Sandeep Gadhave said the stretch must be opened without delay. “The space beneath the Mrinal Tai Gore flyover is ideal for morning walks, exercise and even Dhol Tasha Pathak practice. Why is it locked? Are they waiting for the BMC elections? If opened in the mornings, residents would benefit greatly,” he said.
Gadhave suggested converting the space into an open gym, noting that Dhol Tasha groups previously used the area for practice.
Residents from Vanrai and nearby areas currently walk along the service road of the Western Express Highway. If the flyover space was opened, they said it would provide a safer, calmer alternative for walks and meditation.
