Technical failure halts PRS for 4 hours in Mumbai; services restored

After a technical failure struck the VC FLEX Switch, all Passenger Reservation System (PRS) locations across Mumbai came to a standstill on Friday afternoon. The pause in PRS rendered the system non-functional from 1:00 pm. 

As reported, the switch had gone into “down status”, affecting PRS operations across Central Railway (CR), Western Railway (WR), Konkan Railway (KRCL) and West Central Railway (WCR).

Moreover, the Centre for Railway Information Systems (CRIS) and HP engineering teams immediately reached the site and began restoration work with a view to bringing things back to normal.

However, the long-distance ticket reservations were severely hampered; officials confirmed that Unreserved Ticketing System (UTS) operations continued without facing any issue, ensuring local train passengers faced no disruption.

In order to quickly make the services operational, CRIS also initiated the process of shifting operations to its Disaster Recovery (DR) centre in Secunderabad. The switchover procedure was expected to take around one to one-and-a-half hours.

Following the quick operation by the team, full services were eventually restored after nearly four hours of outage, bringing relief to passengers and staff grappling with delayed reservation activity.
