On Monday, November 24, Rakul took to her X handle (formerly Twitter) and shared, “Hi guys… it`s come to my notice that someone is impersonating on WhatsApp as me and chatting with people. Please notice this isn`t my number and do not engage in any random conversations. Kindly block.” (sic) She also shared a screenshot of the WhatsApp account which showed the imposter using the number `8111067586`.

On the work front, Rakul was last seen in De De Pyaar De 2, the sequel to her 2019 film De De Pyaar De with Ajay Devgn. The sequel, released on Novemeber 14, saw her reprising her role as Ayesha while Ajay returned as Ashish.

Other celebs who raised similar concerns

Interestingly, this is not the first time such an issue has come to light. Actresses Aditi Rao Hydari and Shriya Saran have also flagged similar impersonation attempts in recent days.

Aditi Rao Hydari had earlier issued a similar statement raising concern. She wrote, “Hi Everyone, I wanted to flag something that a few people brought to my notice today. Someone has been pretending to be me on WhatsApp, using my pictures and messaging photographers about photoshoots. It isn’t me. I don’t reach out like this, and I don’t use any personal number for work. Everything always goes through my team. Please be careful and don’t engage with that number. If you come across anything odd, just let my team know. Thank you to all those who have my back and are so protective and kind. Love, Aditi (sic).”

Similarly, during a recent interview with HT City, Shriya Saran also addressed the impersonation incident, sharing, “This is not the first time someone has done this, but this is the first time I took a proper stand against it. This isn’t just about a number or a WhatsApp profile picture, there are so many morphed pictures of mine that look so real. What can you really do? People are mad. You have to be careful, but beyond a point, if something is affecting other people, you have to address it.”

She further added, “Almost every day, I see a picture of mine that is not me—somebody else’s body with my face—on my Insta feed. My family has to go through all this; sometimes they even get fooled by the AI images. It’s becoming difficult to distinguish between fake and real. Sometimes they do a good job, and it’s really hard to tell. I’m like, ‘Is it me?’ It looks so close to what I look like. That’s when the problem really comes, because it can fool family and people I know.”

“We told cybercrime, we told people it’s going on, and we’ve made it clear that it’s not me. I am just hoping no one gets fooled by the impersonator,” she added.
