Maharashtra: Gangster wanted in attempt-to-murder case arrested in Thane

A gangster, wanted in connection with an attempt to murder case, was arrested in Maharashtra`s Thane district after evading the police for 18 months, an official said on Monday, reported news agency PTI.

The Hill Line police in Ulhasnagar on Saturday apprehended Akshay Suresh Gaikwad alias Babu (35), who had gone underground after attacking a man in April last year, Deputy Commissioner of Police Sachin Gore said, reported PTI.

“Acting on a tip-off about the accused`s whereabouts, our team surrounded him. He was swiftly overpowered and handcuffed,” the official said, reported PTI.

Gaikwad has at least 20 cases, including assault, extortion, attempt to murder, and offences under the Maharashtra Police Act, to his name, police said.

Man kills wife, surrenders before police

In another case, a 56-year-old man allegedly murdered his wife on Thursday as he suspected her character and later surrendered before police, said an official, reported PTI.

The accused was identified as Siraj Naik, a resident of Kachha Road in Malvani area of the city, reported PTI.

Naik allegedly killed his wife Mumtaz by hitting her on the head with a large stone, and went to the nearby police station hours later, reported PTI.

He was booked for murder, and further investigation is underway, the official said.

Man arrested for murder of 75-year-old woman

Meanwhile, a man has been arrested for the alleged murder of a 75-year-old woman at Dhage Pimpalgaon in the district earlier this month, police said on Thursday, reported PTI.

The accused was identified as Ganesh Narayan Dhage (24), reported PTI.

Ahilyabai Masaji Dhage, the victim, was found lying unconscious in the field where she was working on the morning of November 3 and died at the hospital. Autopsy revealed that she had been strangulated, reported PTI.

As per the police, the accused killed the woman due to a dispute over matters related to farming. Further probe was on.

Meanwhile, a 51-year-old jeweller was killed in Maharashtra`s Thane district, allegedly by his wife and son over a suspected property dispute, police said on Thursday, reported PTI.

The body of Sushanto Pal was found with severe injuries on Wednesday in his house-cum-jewellery shop in the Bhayander area, said the official from Navghar police station, reported PTI.

Working on various leads, the police took into custody Pal`s wife Amruta (42) and their 19-year-old son Sumit at night, he said, reported PTI.

“Initial reports indicate that the mother-son duo killed the victim over a property dispute,” he said.
