The suburban railway services on Mumbai’s Western Railway (WR) have returned to normal after a Level-2 fire near Mahim Fatak disrupted operations on Saturday afternoon. According to railway officials, the first Harbour line train on the DOWN route departed at 2:11 pm, moving at 10 kmph after a memo was issued, while on the UP Fast line, caution orders were relaxed at 2.29 pm. All services are now operating normally, said the railways said.
A blaze broke out earlier in the day at the Navrang Compound near Mahim Fatak, close to the Sion–Mahim Link Road in Dharavi. The Mumbai Fire Brigade (MFB) received the first alert at 12.29 pm. The fire was confined to a ground-plus-one hutment structure located near the railway phatak and Noor Restaurant on 60-Feet Road.
Fire engines from Dadar, Bandra-Kurla Complex (BKC), Bandra, and Shivaji Park stations were deployed, along with police teams, 108 ambulance services and ward staff. At 1.18 pm, MFB upgraded the incident to a Level-2 fire. No injuries have been reported so far, and the cause of the blaze is under investigation.
Given the fire’s proximity to railway tracks, WR regulated multiple suburban trains between Mahim and Bandra, holding up several services as a precaution.
Harbour line services towards Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) were suspended from 12.43 pm, according to the WR control office.
“Five trains have been regulated and were waiting between Mahim and Bandra. There have been no injuries to anyone so far,” a Western Railway Spokesperson told mid-day.com earlier.
Road traffic on 60-Feet Road was also impacted as firefighting operations continued. Railway authorities and fire brigade officials monitored the situation until clearance was granted.
With caution orders now lifted and train movement fully restored, regular WR and Harbour line operations have resumed.
