Man killed, pillion rider injured after bike rams into truck in Goregaon

A 22-year-old man was killed and another seriously injured after their motorcycle collided with a dumper truck in Mumbai’s Goregaon East early on Sunday, police said, reported the PTI.

The accident took place near Pathanwadi Junction in the western suburbs.

The deceased, identified as Nikhil Babaji Kadare, a student and resident of Goregaon, died on the spot. His pillion rider, Sumit Shri Krishna Khairnar (22), sustained severe injuries and was taken to hospital, an official said, as per the PTI.

According to police, the duo was travelling towards Goregaon along the Western Express Highway when the dumper truck in front of them suddenly turned. Kadare lost control of the motorcycle, which rammed into the vehicle.

The dumper driver fled immediately after the accident. A case has been registered under Section 106-A (culpable homicide not amounting to murder) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and relevant provisions of the Motor Vehicles Act, the official added.

Meanwhile, in an another incident in neighbouring Thane district, five persons, including a pregnant woman and two children, were injured when an elevator collapsed in a BSUP (Basic Services for Urban Poor) residential building in Thane on Saturday afternoon, the officials said, according to the PTI.

Prima facie, the incident occurred when the lift cable snapped while the elevator was between the fourth and fifth floors, sending it crashing down with a loud bang.
Local residents rushed to the scene, rescued the trapped occupants, and took them to a nearby medical facility. All five sustained minor injuries and were treated locally, officials added, the news agency reported.

“Our local fire station did not receive any call about the incident. We learned about it through social media posts and circulating videos. The injured were rescued by residents before our teams could be alerted,” Yasin Tadvi, Chief of the Regional Disaster Management Cell (RDMC) of the Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC), told PTI.

The Thane BJP unit submitted a memorandum to the municipal commissioner, demanding a structural and technical audit of all BSUP buildings in Kopri and Siddharthnagar areas of Thane district in Maharashtra, officials said.
